Jeter Teams With 24 Hour Fitness To Design, Open Gyms In N.Y.
Published February 19, 2008
24 Hour Fitness has partnered with Yankees SS Derek Jeter to open three gyms in N.Y. branded as 24 Hour Fitness-Derek Jeter. The first location will open in June on Fifth Avenue, with two more scheduled to open over the next year. Rockets C Yao Ming, Suns C Shaquille O'Neal, Basketball HOFer Magic Johnson, Lance Armstrong and Andre Agassi are among those with signature clubs (24 Hour Fitness). In N.Y. Holly Sanders reported Jeter is an equity partner in the gyms. The first club will be 28,000 square feet and "boast amenities including a pro shop with fitness apparel, a Starbucks and XM Satellite Radio." Jeter has been involved in the design details and is "aiming for a 'New York flavor,' which he describes as 'sophisticated,' 'classy' and 'hip.'" 24 Hour Fitness CEO Carl Liebert III said that membership costs will be moderately priced, "suggesting it will be competitive with chains such as New York Sports Club." Sanders noted the deal is "separate from the agreement [24 Hour Fitness] signed last year with the Yankees team to open three baseball-themed clubs in the city" (N.Y. POST, 2/18).
