ABC/ESPN, TNT Up In NBA Ratings; Blazers, CSN NW Off To Strong Debut
Published February 14, 2008
NBA ratings on the league’s national TV partners are on the rise this season. Through the first five NBA broadcasts on ABC, the net is averaging a 2.6 Nielsen rating, up 4.0% from the same period last year. Ratings on ESPN are flat, but the net is seeing an increase in households, up 5.4%. Ratings for the 33 NBA games aired on TNT so far this season are up 10% from a year ago, when the net already had aired 52 games. TNT's top-rated game of the season has been the Rockets-Lakers on opening night, which earned a 1.5 U.S. rating and 1.7 million HHs. The net is also up in key demographics, seeing double-digit gains in males 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54. Among the RSNs, Comcast SportsNet Northwest, in its first season airing Trail Blazers games, is seeing the biggest increase in HH ratings, up 293.8% from last year, when the team’s games aired on FSN Northwest. The Celtics success on the court has led to increases on CSN New England, with the team up 100% in HH ratings. Excluding Kings' telecasts, which were not tracked by Nielsen last year, Comcast is seeing a 70% jump in HH ratings among its RSNs. Despite seeing steep declines at the gate, Pacers' fans are tuning in to watch the team on FSN Indiana (+31.3%), while Hawks are seeing increases for game telecasts on both SportSouth and FSN South. On the whole, NBA game telecasts on FSN's regional networks are averaging a 2.38 HH rating, up 0.8% from the same period a year ago. Heading into All-Star Weekend, the following presents average U.S. ratings for the NBA's national TV partners, as well as team-by-team RSN household ratings, compared to the same period last year.
