In The Running: Giants Among Bidders To Develop S.F. Port Land
Published February 14, 2008
A group led by the MLB Giants is among "at least three teams of bidders" expected to submit plans to the Port of S.F. "to remake the 16-acre stretch of land immediately south of the Giants ballpark,'' according to Robert Selna of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The parcel "currently is covered by a parking lot used by Giants fans on game days.'' Giants reps said their experience building the ballpark made the team "most qualified to handle the complicated project." Giants COO Larry Baer said, "No one else has been able to pull off a project of this scale on the waterfront. ... We can develop this for the port better than others can." The Giants' proposal, which is estimated at more than $1B, includes 875 homes, many of which will be in a 300-foot high-rise, 800,000 square feet of office space, a parking garage, a 5,000-seat music hall, an entertainment district, a 5-acre park and a refurbished pier for staging trade shows and private events. The Giants said that their development team of Baltimore-based Cordish Co. and S.F.-based Farallon Capital Management "would cover the costs of the project" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 2/14).
