Kelly Tilghman Offers On-Air Apology For Woods Remark

Golf Channel’s coverage of the Buick Invitational yesterday began with anchor Kelly Tilghman's taped apology for her remarks about Tiger Woods. However, as Tilghman came on-screen and began speaking, there was no audio for the first five seconds. When audio was restored, Tilghman said, “(I) used an inappropriate word that was offensive to many. Over the last two weeks, I’ve taken the time to reflect and truly understand the impact of what I said. While I did not intend to offend anyone, I understand why those words were hurtful. I am terribly sorry for any hurt that I’ve caused. I would like to express my deepest apologies.” Coverage then shifted to a package narrated by Tilghman that introduced the tournament (Golf Channel, 1/24). The audio was not interrupted on Golf Channel’s in-house feed, according to a spokesperson. Her statement began, “Hi, I’m Kelly Tilghman. It’s an honor to be with you again. In a recent live broadcast, ...” (Jon Show, SportsBusiness Journal).
