Blog Hound: Rising Sun Over Wrigley
Published January 25, 2008
The Cubs' '08 ad campaign includes new ads that feature new Japanese RF Kosuke Fukudome with a rising sun motif that evokes the flag used by Japan's military during World War II. While one Blog site claims to have originated the design concept, other bloggers discuss the choice of image.

“We no longer teach real history in American High Schools and Universities my guess is the people putting this ad together really did not understand the history behind the Rising Sun flag.”
UmpBump Posted by: Nick Kapur
“What’s more amazing than the fact that this ad campaign even exists is the way the Cubs are so blithely hyping it on their official website.”

“Now if they can just figure out a way to blame this faux pas on Steve Bartman.”
ShysterBall Posted by: Marc in Tallahassee
“One thing all Japanese would agree on is that the battle flag, regardless of one's position on it, is obviously too politically divisive to be used in a baseball ad.”
East Windup Chronicle Posted by: Shinsano
“I like the design. The words are kind of funny and the rising sun logo is cool.”
BUILDING THE BUZZ: Sports Media Challenge's Buzz Manager analyzed the online buzz about the ad campaign. Bloggers who didn’t take issue with the ad were tallied positive, representing 31.25% of posts.
