NFL Playoff Teams Seeing Impact On Merchandise Sales
Published January 11, 2008
Patriots merchandise sales last month moved from eighth to fourth among NFL teams behind the Cowboys, Steelers and Colts, according to SportsOneSource data cited by John Powers of the BOSTON GLOBE. If the Patriots “hadn’t been winning so steadily, its numbers likely would be even higher.” SportsOneSource Senior Retail Analyst Matt Powell: “If I bought a [No. 12 Tom Brady] jersey three years ago, do I need a new one this year?” (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/11).
ROMO IN '08: Atlanta-based WQXI-AM’s Matt Chernoff said the Cowboys are selling on their Web site $20 T-shirts of QB Tony Romo that say “Tony Romo For President.” Chernoff, on Romo: “His jersey has been flying off the racks, and this T-shirt is a very hot-selling item for Christmas. You can have that or you can have the pink/white jersey that Jessica Simpson wore (at the team's game last month against the Eagles), or you can have a new one. They haven’t put this one on the Web site yet, but it’s going to be Jessica’s name squeezed with the No. 9 on the back for Tony Romo” (“Put Up Your Dukes,” NFL Network, 1/10).
PACKERS: Sheri Tanner, owner of The Jersey Store in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, said that if the Packers “end up hosting the NFC championship game, her business could sell out of Packers’ jerseys and T-shirts.” She said that NFL exclusive apparel provider Reebok “didn’t anticipate the Packers’ successful season, so there is a shortage of inventory of Packers jerseys and the basic green T-shirts” (GREEN PAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 1/10).
