Virginia Beach Is For Redskins? Team In Talks To Move Camp

Redskins Could Move Training Camp
To Virginia Beach As Early As '09
The Redskins are in "preliminary talks with [Virginia Beach, Virginia] staff to move the team's training camp to the Virginia Beach Sportsplex" as early as '09, according to Deirdre Fernandes of the Norfolk VIRGINIAN-PILOT. Virginia Beach officials said that the Redskins "are asking the city to pony up about $2.5[M], including infrastructure improvements to the Sportsplex," including weight training facilities and an additional practice field. Virginia Beach reps also noted that the Redskins are seeking "seclusion, so players can focus and practice ... without the distractions of being so close to home." The team has held its training camp at team HQs in Ashburn, Virginia, just outside of DC, since '03. Negotiations arose from Virginia Beach's existing relationship with the club through the Redskins Beach Blitz, an annual event that "draws about 7,000 Redskins fans" to the city (Norfolk VIRGINIAN-PILOT, 1/4).
