FLW Outdoors to Launch Online Fantasy Fishing League
Published December 12, 2007
FLW Outdoors is "offering a $1[M] payout to the winner of [a] newly launched online fantasy-fishing competition," according to Ann Zimmerman of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. FLW Outdoors Chair Irwin Jacobs, who also owns boat maker Genmar Holdings, "made the announcement at a large breakfast at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan attended by numerous professional anglers and the media." The $1M prize would mark the "largest payout" in fantasy sports, surpassing the $250,000 offered by an online fantasy football club. Jacobs is also offering a $5M bonus prize to the player "who registers before Dec. 21 and picks the top seven anglers of any tournament." While players can register a team on FantasyFishing.com for free, it costs $39.95 "to access detailed information about the pro anglers, lake conditions and expert commentary." In exchange for the fee, players also get "a subscription to FLW Outdoors magazine and a $15 gift card to [FLW title sponsor] Wal-Mart." Wal-Mart will run an in-store fantasy-fishing promotion in the spring (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 12/12).
