MLB VP/On-Field Operations Bob Watson said that managers “no longer will be able to wear” pullover jackets as part of their in-game uniforms. The Red Sox’ Terry Francona, Blue Jays’ John Gibbons and Indians’ Eric Wedge last year wore pullover jackets during games, and Francona “butted heads with the league when asked to display his uniform top” (BOSTON HERALD, 12/4).
MLS: MLS Deputy Commissioner Ivan Gazidis last week attended Soccerex, an int’l soccer business conference in South Africa, and said, “What is the real story of 2007 for MLS? The actual story has been looking to South America and importing players from South America who are very significant performers in our league. South America -- that is a market we are mining internationally in the short term” (MIAMI HERALD, 12/2).
PGA TOUR: The WALL STREET JOURNAL’s John Paul Newport wrote under the header, “Golf, Drugs And Denial. Players Scoff, But Performance Enhancers Could Hit PGA.” Newport wrote, “It does seem unlikely that top pro golfers are rampantly abusing performance-enhancing drugs. … But it is striking how similar the protestations of innocence are to the choruses of denial that arose in years past in sports like baseball, cycling, swimming and track that subsequently were rocked by doping scandals” (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 12/1).
