WFAN Hires Heyman From ESPN-1050, Hires Girardi For Weekly Spot
Published November 20, 2007
WFAN-AM has hired Jon Heyman away from ESPN Radio 1050 N.Y. after five years with the station and added new Yankees manager Joe Girardi for a weekly in-season guest spot, "ending speculation that he might land at 1050 with former YES partner Michael Kay," according to Neil Best of NEWSDAY. WFAN Operations Dir Mark Chernoff indicated that ESPN's "ban on their own personnel appearing on WFAN puts a premium on landing quality guests and correspondents of its own." Chernoff called ESPN "a big, gigantic news operation. They have hundreds of people working full time. We are just little old WFAN here in New York." Chernoff did not reveal financials of Girardi's deal, but Best notes "it is believed to be more" than Joe Torre's approximate $350,000 deal when he managed the Yankees (NEWSDAY, 11/20).
