  • A's Commissioned Poll Shows Support For Ballpark Plan

A's Release Poll That Says Fremont
    Residents Support Ballpark Project
An A's commissioned telephone survey of 400 Fremont, California resident conducted in September revealed that sixty-two percent of residents favor the team's ballpark village project, compared with 34% who oppose the project, according to Matthew Artz of the CONTRA COSTA TIMES. The A's, who "did not release much" of the 66-question poll, were "viewed favorably" by 69% of respondents.  A's Owner Lew Wolff was viewed favorably by 44% and negatively by 18%. The poll's margin of error was 4.9%. A's co-Owner Keith Wolff said the team conducted the study because it wanted to "confirm that the support throughout the community mirrored what we were seeing (at council and community meetings)." However, former Fremont Mayor Gus Morrison, who opposes the project, said, "Everyone knows (traffic is) going to be bad, but no one realizes how bad it's going to be." Artz notes the only traffic-related question on the A's poll "queried the importance respondents placed on connecting the stadium" with public transportation. On a scale from one to seven, 53% polled ranked the transit as a seven with the "highest level of importance" (CONTRA COSTA TIMES, 11/15).

  • Santa Anita Park To Tweak Weekly Live Racing Schedule

Santa Anita Park Tweaks Race Schedule
In Hopes Of Increasing On-Track Business
Santa Anita Park will conduct live horse racing “in an effort to increase on-track business” on a Thursday-Monday schedule during its 71st winter/spring meeting from December 26-April 20. The track has traditionally hosted live racing on a Wednesday-Sunday schedule (THOROUGHBREDTIMES.com, 11/13). Santa Anita President Ron Charles said that the change is a “one-year experiment to see how fans respond.” Charles said that the track will “invest heavily in promoting Monday racing, including free general admission and on-track handicapping contests and free box-seat accommodations for Thoroughbred Club members on a first-come, first-served basis.”  The track will also offer a “strong simulcast menu” on Mondays (SAN GABRIEL VALLEY TRIBUNE, 11/14).
