Quinn & Fainaru-Wada Join ESPN 15-Person Enterprise Unit
Published November 14, 2007
N.Y. Daily News writer T.J. Quinn and S.F. Chronicle reporter Mark Fainaru-Wada, both known for their work on the sports steroid scandal, are leaving their respective newspapers to join ESPN November 26. Quinn and Fainaru-Wada will be based in N.Y. and S.F., respectively, and will contribute to various ESPN programming as part of a new Enterprise Unit reporting on investigative topics throughout sports (ESPN). EDITOR & PUBLISHER's Joe Strupp reported ESPN's Enterprise Unit will consist of 15 people, and ESPN Senior VP & Dir of News Vince Doria said the remaining enterprise members will come from within ESPN. Doria said of the new unit, "This is more or less formalizing reporting we have done all along." Doria indicated that Fainaru-Wada and Quinn would "not report only on steroid-related issues, but other investigative topics as well." Fainaru-Wada said he and S.F. Chronicle reporter Lance Williams "always feared [the N.Y. Daily News] more as the BALCO story progressed, they had been all over it." Quinn said he was not looking to leave the Daily News, but said "the people (ESPN) put together in there is a great group" (EDITORANDPUBLSIHER.com, 11/13).
