Cotton Club: Stern, Knicks Support D-League Team In Harlem
Published November 12, 2007
NBA Commissioner David Stern “wants to put an [NBDL] team in Harlem,” and the Knicks “have expressed an interest,” according to William Rhoden of the N.Y. TIMES. Stern said, “The Knicks are all over the idea. It’s a great cultural tie-in.” He added that Harlem “represents a caldron of basketball tradition that would give much-needed weight" to the D-League. Rhoden writes despite suggestions that the team should play at the armory at 142nd Street and Fifth Avenue, “the only place to play is in the old Renaissance Casino and Ballroom.” The center has been boarded up for almost 30 years and seating "might be an issue," but D-League President Dan Reed said that are "some franchises with 3,000-seat arenas" (N.Y. TIMES, 11/12).
