De La Hoya Could Stage Outdoor Bout At Dodger Stadium In May
Published November 9, 2007
Oscar De La Hoya “would like to stage his next fight in May at Dodger Stadium,” according to Lance Pugmire of the L.A. TIMES. De La Hoya and business partner, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, “have yet to officially propose” the bout to Dodgers officials, but the “probable May 3 date is open,” as the Dodgers play the Rockies in Denver that day. Dodgers Senior VP/Communications Camille Johnston said, “We’d be happy to discuss with them if they give us a call.” Pugmire notes the first and last boxing match in the ballpark was in March of ’63, when featherweight Davey Moore suffered brain damage that killed him days later. Moore’s death “led to safety improvements” for the sport and inspired the Bob Dylan song, “Who Killed Davey Moore?” (L.A. TIMES, 11/9).
