Blog Hound: Cable-Only MLB Playoff Games
Published October 5, 2007
The MLB playoffs began Wednesday with division series games on TBS. With Turner Sports providing exclusive telecasts of all ALDS, NLDS and NLCS games, there are some grumblings over the fact that none of these games will be available on over-the-air television at a national or local level. Bloggers debate the impact of the cable-only format.

“Imagine you’re a Cubs fan (hurts, I know) and they’re in the NLCS. You don’t have cable TV, so you’re going to have to go to a bar (which would probably be a lot of fun) or suffer through Ron Santo on WGN radio.”

“Baseball’s deal with TBS isn’t nearly as risky as the NFL’s 1994 decision to leave CBS and move to Fox, a network which at the time was primarily seen only on UHF frequencies”
In The Mix
“A major sports league ending up on random cable stations … is very strange to me. It worries me that ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and ESPN can't be bothered to spend the money on the Division Series.”

“I was ecstatic to find out Comcast had added TBS’ HD channel to the package and I was able to watch the MLB divisional playoffs in crystal clear HD.”

“No big deal if you have extended cable…VERY big deal if you don’t! Unfortunately, I fall into that latter category.”
