Newsmakers: Isiah, Dolan Obvious Losses This Week

THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of some people and entities in sports business. Here are this week’s newsmakers.

Thomas (l) And Dolan Have Tough Week
Following Verdict In Harassment Case
WIN: NJSEA -- We know BRETT YORMARK’s sales team did the work and is establishing a naming-rights division, but the state authority walks away with $750,000 a year in revenue from its deal with Izod, $410,000 more in cash than they were getting from previous partner Continental Airlines, especially important considering the competitive N.Y. landscape. In addition, Izod’s a non-traditional naming-rights partner looking to activate, which is always a benefit. The NJSEA hopes this bold deal sends a message that the arena is not going away any time soon.

LOSS: ISIAH THOMAS/JAMES DOLAN -- Jury verdict surprises defense, dominates tabloids and even non-sports media all week.  It’s generally not a good week when your company is portrayed as a boorish boys club with an unenlightened corporate culture.

DRAW TURNER SPORTS -- The uniformity of having all the MLB divisional series on one network is easy for the viewer, hours of postseason baseball on one network is bliss, ad sales are strong for network and there are few first-season production jitters during its first week.  However, critics pan MLB/TBS' start times, and on-air personalities are getting mixed reviews. And enough already with the promos for "Frank TV."
