Blog Hound: Oden's Bad News
Published September 18, 2007
Following the news that Trail Blazers C Greg Oden, the No. 1 overall pick in June's NBA Draft, likely would miss an entire year after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee, the blogs erupted. Regarding the franchise, many bloggers couldn't help seeing comparisons to the Blazers' injury-plagued past and the now-infamous choice to draft Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan in '84, while some remained optimistic about Portland's future.

“If this means the Blazers lose a few extra games this season, that means they get that many more ping pong balls in next year’s draft lottery.”
FanHouse Posted by: Marcel Mutoni
“This is just another example of how devastating the Oden knee injury is not just for the Blazers franchise but for the entire League.”
Yardbarker Posted by: heitner
“I'm not worried about Oden's absence having a negative impact on the league as a whole. After all; Kevin Durant is healthy and ready to roll!”
HoopsVibe Posted by: Oly Sandor
“The Blazers spent the last few years erasing the Jail Blazer legacy and building momentum. If Oden doesn’t recover, will Portland fans still support the team? Remember, the Blazers have had arena issues.”
Sports Debate Posted by: theconvictor
“Oden is a high-character guy who oozes charisma. The Blazers were badly in need of a guy like him to be the face of their franchise. Too bad they'll have to wait a year before they see him in action.”

- The topic measured 7 out of 10 on The Buzz, indicating a high level of interest.
- Positive Sentiment/Exposure stems from bloggers who believe Oden will bounce back and give the Blazers what they need in a franchise player. Many Trail Blazers bloggers are supportive of Oden and wish him well in his recovery. Others support the Blazers by noting there was no indication of how serious the injury was until he actually was under the knife for what was supposed to be a minor surgery.
- Negative Sentiment/ Exposure stems from bloggers who feel the Blazers must have had some idea of Oden’s injury and should have been more thorough in their medical examinations. Some bloggers point to that fact that this could be a repeat of the Bowie draft pick, and that passing on Durant could haunt them like Jordan did in ‘84. Many feel that this is not only a blow to the Trail Blazers, but also to the NBA as the league was sure to benefit from the Oden and Durant Northwest rivalry.
