Blog Hound: Sonics Owners Taking a Hit On Arena Situation
Published August 14, 2007
The Sonics arena situation took a new turn this week with investor Aubrey McClendon and Owner Clay Bennett defending their intentions to reach a deal to stay in Seattle.

“I think [McClendon] forgets that if the Sonics continue to struggle once they make their move to OK City, the fan base is going to drop. If the fan base drops, the Sonics franchise will be no longer.”
TrueHoop Posted by: Henry Abbott
“I just don't think [McClendon] should get this [team], at this time, in Oklahoma City. Not this way … it sends a devastating message to sports fans. It says that the team you love could be ripped away from you and the people selling the team, the people buying the team, and the league will all pretend to you that it is not even happening.”

“It is not okay to remove the Sonics from Seattle and let this despicable act of collusion take place. This must be stopped.”
SonicsCentral.com
“Our prior ownership group should really be both embarrassed and ashamed. I know that lots of them voted against the sale and lots of them didn’t see this coming, however when you made a mistake you should stand up and try to fix it. Not one of them has gone public and led a cry to do anything.”
Obscure Sports Quarterly
“A friend pointed out that this doesn’t happen in too many other industries where owners completely disregard their customers. They may take advantage of their employees, the government or other people. But if they did something to annoy their customers this much, they’d be out of business."
BUILDING THE BUZZ: Sports Media Challenge's Sports Blog Index analyzed the buzz surrounding the team's potential move. Sonics bloggers and general sports bloggers have responded very negatively towards the ownership group. Click here for more analysis.Visit www.SportsBusinessDaily.com for more analysis.
- The topic measured 5 out of 10 on The Buzz, indicating a medium level of interest.
- Most bloggers feel that the city has several options in forcing the team to stay and hope that the city will exhaust these options before allowing it to leave.
- Many bloggers comment on the ownership's lack of PR savvy, given the frankness of their statements regarding the move and the apparent lack of understanding that the response would be so negative.
