NFL, Christian Groups Against Repeal Of Internet Gambling Act
Published August 14, 2007
The NFL has joined forces with Christian group Focus on the Family to oppose legislation introduced by U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) that would repeal the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of '06, according to Stephanie Kirchgaessner of the FINANCIAL TIMES. A July 31 e-mail from NFL lobbyist Bill Wichterman “encouraged conservative groups to co-sign a letter to Congress that ostensibly was written by Focus on the Family,” the evangelical group led by James Dobson. Groups such as the Christian Coalition and American Values, among others, signed the letter. The NFL said that it did not write the letter and that “there was nothing unusual about its alliance with the Christian groups.” Although Frank's proposal contains an "‘opt-out’ for individual sports leagues such as the NFL,” many observers said that the proposal “will not become law as long as it includes a provision that allows bets on sports.” Former U.S. Sen. Alfonse D’Amato said, “I don’t believe the NFL can be defeated on this” (FINANCIAL TIMES, 8/14).
