Pony Looking To Make A Comeback With New Products
Published August 13, 2007
Pony, which was recently bought by Infinity Associates, is “plotting a comeback … with a slate of innovative products and an aggressive advertising plan scheduled to ramp up early next year,” according to Jennifer Davies of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Pony was “once considered a formidable sports performance brand, on par with Adidas and Nike,” but has become a “celebrity-driven brand” with endorsers such as Snoop Dogg and Jenna Jameson. Pony CEO Kevin Wulff said, “People under 25 have a different view of the brand and view it as more of a fashion brand.” He indicated that the plan is to “re-establish Pony as a premier sports brand, with athlete endorsements and cutting-edge technologies.” Wulff believes that there are “plenty of athletes out there who still respect the Pony brand and would welcome the focus a smaller company could provide.” Davies noted the company is also “planning a vintage line that re-creates top-sellers from the glory day,” and will introduce “new styles including casual flats for women, and high top sneakers.” The company recently hired Kyle Pulli, a “well-known” shoe designer from adidas, to craft its new shoe line (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/13).
