Blog Hound: Gambling Scandal Could Rock NBA
Published July 24, 2007
With the FBI currently investigating an illegal betting operation that includes former NBA referee Tim Donaghy and members of the mob, bloggers are discussing the magnitude of the reports and the potential damage it could do to the future of the NBA.

“For a sport that is so concerned with its image to the point where the commissioner dictates what players wear on the bench when they’re not playing, this is a major freaking mess. It’s something that will not go away any time soon.”

“True NBA fans will deeply be hurt by this scandal and think back at past times trying to think whether any of it was actually real. Eventually they will realize this was a good development - like finding out your fiancée was cheating on you.”

“But the worst part is the cynicism. Thanks to you, Mr. Donaghy, sports fans have lost another piece of their innocence. You certainly aren’t the first person to open our eyes, and you won’t be the last.”

“I guess I’m a minority on this, but it still looks like one crooked ref to me. This whole scandal sucks, no doubt, but am I alone in thinking that the league will ultimately be fine?”

“Tim Donaghy’s name should be burned into our minds with Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson as figures who did the unthinkable and altered the sanctity of sports by getting in bed with gamblers.”

“It is bigger than Michael Vick’s loathsome dogfighting allegations. It is bigger than all of the rampant criminality in the NFL, in fact. The Donaghy story is more significant than the ubiquitous steroids in baseball by a factor of multitudes.”
BUILDING THE BUZZ: Sports Media Challenge's Sports Blog Index analyzed the buzz surrounding Stern's handling of the scandal. Bloggers are overwhelmingly negative towards Stern and the league on a whole, saying that this incident puts the integrity of the entire league in question.Click here for more analysis.Visit www.SportsBusinessDaily.com for more analysis.
- The topic measured a 10 out of 10 on The Buzz, which indicates a high level
- Many bloggers point out the fact that Stern has always appeared unflappable in the face of criticism and that this is absolutely not a time to act smug.
- Many bloggers are wondering why, if the league knew that Donaghy had a gambling problem, he was allowed to continue officiating.
- Many bloggers are taking a wait-and-see approach to the situation to see which games Donaghy was told to influence, and who Donaghy names as accomplices both within and outside the NBA.
