Suns Become First NBA Team To Show All Games In HD
Published July 20, 2007
The Suns, who handle their own TV production for all but nationally-televised games, will broadcast all of their games in HDTV next season, a first for an NBA team. Team President Rick Welts said that while there was no immediate economic benefit to the Suns, with 71 straight sellouts and season tickets sold out for next year, local TV production is more important than ever. “This is an exercise in brand building," he said. “We’re trying to position this team as as the most technologically-advanced franchise in the NBA, and this is a step in that direction." The Suns will televise 71 games locally in HD, with the remaining going to NBA TV rights holders, which already broadcast in HD (Terry Lefton, THE DAILY). Suns Dir of Broadcasting Dan Siekmann said that production costs will increase 25-30% per game (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 7/20).
