Blog Hound: Sheffield’s Comments Have Bloggers Ranting
Published July 17, 2007
With Tigers DH Gary Sheffield suggesting that during his time with the Yankees, black players were treated differently than white players by manager Joe Torre, bloggers are mostly critical of Sheffield and Rangers CF Kenny Lofton, who has since backed Sheffield’s claim.

“If he’s going to say that Torre isn’t racist, despite treating black and white players differently, then it sounds much more like a Joe Torre-Gary Sheffield problem. Adding race to the equation makes for a sexier story and a snappier soundbite but that doesn’t make it any more true.”
Fire Danny Ainge
“Gary Sheffield gets to say whatever he wants and it gets dismissed as Gary is being Gary. I am NO defender of the New York Yankees but if anyone is the racist in this situation it is Gary Sheffield. If Joe Torre truly treated black and white players differently he would not have been in baseball as long as he has been. Not in New York”
Raw Sports
“II would have a much easier time believing these two if they didn’t have an axe to grind. I have no doubt that they have both been treated differently by Torre but, considering Derek Jeter is like a son to him, I doubt it has anything to do with race.”
The Agon Posted By: Michael Butterworth
“In our haste to label Sheffield an idiot, we might be missing the possibility that Torre, or others in baseball, in fact treat minority players differently.”
Sports Talk
“When a player calls out a former manager for treating players of different races differently, he better have some excellent evidence to support his claim. Sheffield did that and he has no evidence. That’s just where the problems begin.”
