In Baltimore, Justin Fenton reports several Maryland state lawmakers “urged Ripken Baseball yesterday to renegotiate deals with the city of Aberdeen and help the small community as it struggles with debts it took on to build a minor league baseball complex” for the Single-A N.Y.-Penn League Aberdeen IronBirds. (see THE DAILY, 7/16). The city has “sought more money from Ripken entities,” but the two sides “have failed to resolve differences.” A spokesperson for Baseball HOFer-elect and team Owner Cal Ripken Jr. yesterday reiterated the “willingness of [Ripken] to consider possible remedies” (Baltimore SUN, 7/17).
SUPERDOME: SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL’s Don Muret reports New Orleans-based First Bank & Trust’s four-year deal as the Saints’ official bank, which began last year, “allows it to put its name on the [Superdome's] club level, home to four expansive corner lounges that have been under construction the past year.” Terms of the deal have not been revealed (SBJ, 7/16 issue).
WATER DAMAGE: Cleveland Browns Stadium "will need some major repairs" after a water pipe broke Saturday, "resulting in water and sewage damage." The team cancelled a Friday ticket sales event at the stadium, as well as the August 3 "Family Fun Night" stadium practice (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 7/17).
HORSE RACING: The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority (MTGA) will join Capital Play and other investors in a bid for operating rights at Belmont, Saratoga and Aqueduct. The MTGA will supply the VLTs for the tracks (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 7/16).
