Blog Hound: Blogosphere Debates All-Star Game Relevance
Published July 12, 2007
With the AL beating the NL in Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game to secure home field advantage in the World Series for the fifth consecutive year since the rule was implemented, bloggers are discussing whether the rule influences on-field performance as well as fan interest in the event.
Ken Davidoff’s baseball insider Posted By: Ken Davidoff
“It’s my contention that in a game like this, Major League Baseball’s ‘This Time It Counts’ promotion comes to life. Both dugouts were full of superstar players, anxiously watching the action. There was certainly something at stake.”
Baseball Analysts Posted By: Patrick Sullivan
“The All-Star Game is a tough take these days. A number of the participants don’t belong, neither team plays all that hard (no matter how much Bud Selig wants it to count) and the event just comes off as forced.”
Wogan on Sports Posted By: Jim Wogan
“You can argue whether home field really is an advantage in the World Series (the Tigers had it last year, and lost). And yes, [the] game was watchable even without the rule. But please, don’t call it a gimmick. [Tuesday] night proves it works.”
Wait ‘Til Next Year Posted By: Matt
“Maybe it is just me, but I do not like watching the All-Star Game as much any more. Maybe I am just bitter because the winner of an exhibition game now plays a factor in the World Series.”
My Brewers MLBlog Posted By: Steve Dempsey
“Whether it rotates between leagues each season, goes to the team with the better record overall, or goes to the team with the better interleague record, it should change because the talent is obviously not equal between the two leagues.”
See You At The Yard, Meat Posted By: Matt
“Baseball clearly has the best all-star contest of all the major sports and the past few games have been nailbiters. And for all those complaining about the All Star Game determining home field advantage in the World Series…take a look at how seriously these guys take the game now.”
BUILDING THE BUZZ: Sports Media Challenge's Sports Blog Index analyzed the buzz surrounding NL manager Tony La Russa's decision not to use Albert Pujols in the All-Star Game. Bloggers almost universally disagreed with La Russa's decision. No positive sentiment was found. Click here for more analysis. Visit www.SportsBusinessDaily.com for more analysis.
- Most bloggers cite this as the latest example of La Russa's tendency to outthink himself.
- Cardinals fans wonder if there is a growing rift between La Russa and Pujols, though many cite any suggestion of a problem as the mainstream media attempting to build controversy where there is none.
- Several bloggers point out that the ending to this All-Star Game is representative of the lack of impact of the game in general despite attempts to make it more meaningful and less of an exhibition.
