Blog Hound: Bears' Release Of Tank Johnson Revisited
Published July 5, 2007
With the release of blood tests showing former Bears DT Tank Johnson was below the legal limit for alcohol consumption when he was pulled over in Arizona last month, bloggers are discussing the Bears' decision to release him before the case played out.
411Mania Posted by: Don M. Dumas
“Releasing Johnson before the facts of the case were known was where the Bears made a huge mistake. After standing by their DT's side throughout his jail sentence and subsequent suspension, the organization abandoned Johnson before he could defend himself.”
One More Dying Quail
“It appears he may still have a long way to go, especially if the prosecutor in his case decides to press the issue against a high-profile individual who has serious issues with the law in his not-so-distant past. This leads me to view the recent backlash against the Bears in a different light.”
The DUI Blog
“For the Tribune, and other media outlets, to indicate that Johnson was not DUI aids to the common misconception. If Johnson is not charged with DUI, it will be because the prosecutor believes the testimony of the arresting officer will not be enough, without a presumptive BAC, to convince a jury Johnson was DUI.”
Windy City Gridiron
"While no one with a brain at least the size of a Packers fan, actually thinks releasing Tank was a bad idea, it does go a long way toward him getting picked up by another team. Some team who is desperate or looking for a future replacement, can get away with picking him up and having to answer far fewer questions about morals."
BUILDING THE BUZZ: Sports Media Challenge revisited the buzz surrounding the Bears releasing Johnson. In comparison to the previous analysis, the number of bloggers who were critical of the Bears increased after the latest news was brought to light, but there was still strong support for the Bears and their actions. Bloggers who still support the decision point out that the traffic stop was not an isolated incident, but rather the latest in a series of incidents.

Many bloggers feel that the results from the blood test will alleviate some of the negativity surrounding Johnson and that this will likely result in another team acquring him.
