Boys & Girls Clubs Of America Pulls A-Rod TV Spots
Published June 8, 2007
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) has pulled a TV spot featuring Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez “because of concerns about the ballplayer’s behavior,” according to Beggy & Shanahan of the BOSTON GLOBE. Rodriguez has been "publicly skewered" since being seen with a woman in Toronto who was not his wife. The BGCA said in a statement, “We are deeply concerned about the continuation of ads that might send the wrong message to our children" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/8).
NEW SPOTS: BGCA, the official charity of MLB, debuted two new PSAs, via McCann Erickson, this week. One ad, titled “Perseverance,” features Phillies 1B Ryan Howard, while the other spot, “Teamwork,” features Mets 3B David Wright. ESPN’s Karl Ravech serves as the voice-over for the spots. The ads are running during MLB broadcasts on ESPN, Fox and TBS as well as MLB.com and team-owned media. The BGCA will debut three additional spots over the course of the season, including one in Spanish. To view the Howard and Wright spots, visit SportsBusiness Daily (THE DAILY).
ALL-STAR GAME: Fox Sports and MLB have created the “This One Counts” campaign, a multimillion-dollar, multi-media promotional campaign for the MLB All-Star Game, which will be held July 10 in S.F. The campaign, created in-house by the Fox Sports Marketing Group, will feature 10-, 15-, 30- and 60-second spots. The ads include 30 MLB players from 15 different teams riding through the streets of S.F. in twin cable cars as Wayne Newton’s “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” plays (Fox).
GUILLEN: White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen has filmed a video in Spanish aimed at educating Latin American players about MLB’s Minor League Drug Prevention & Treatment Program and the dangers of using performance-enhancing substances. The video will be shown to everyone participating in the Venezuelan and Dominican Summer Leagues and to other Spanish-speaking players throughout baseball (MLB).
