ECONOMIC IMPACT: In Ft. Lauderdale, Sarah Talalay cites a study by Sport Management Research (SMR) showing that Super Bowl XLI, held at Dolphin Stadium last February, and its accompanying parties and events “helped pump $463[M] into South Florida’s businesses.” That is up 17% from the estimated $396M Super Bowl XXXIII in ’99 — the last one in South Florida — generated for the region. The study, commissioned by the game’s host committee, shows $279M was spent by the estimated 112,403 visitors who came to the region for the game. It also includes dollars spent “preparing for the Super Bowl” and money businesses “received from the sporting event, then put back into the local economy.” But Talalay notes economics professors have doubted the figures in the past (SUN-SENTINEL, 5/24).
