National City Out Of Running To Build New Chargers Stadium

National City Drops Out Of Running
For New Chargers Stadium

National City has “dropped its proposal to build the Chargers a new stadium,” according to Ronald Powell of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. National City Mayor Ron Morrison indicated that city officials “realized there was not enough regional support for their long-shot bid and decided to step aside.” Morrison: “I knew it would be an uphill battle because I’ve worked with local governments for a long time. This is a very fast process, and local government isn’t used to moving very fast.” Powell noted National City’s withdrawal means “possible stadium sites in [San Diego County] are down to two cities: Chula Vista and Oceanside.” Chargers General Counsel Mark Fabiani said, “National City found out the same thing we’ve been finding out for five years — it’s difficult to get the city of San Diego and other partners to engage in a meaningful issue. It’s not a great surprise to us. It’s disappointing, but it’s something we came to terms with a while ago” (UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/12).
