Blog Hound: Is John Daly’s Maxfli Ad Inappropriate?
Published April 26, 2007
With CBS refusing to air a Maxfli ad in which John Daly is shown grabbing a beer while driving a golf cart and singing in a rowdy bar, some bloggers are taking a serious look at the situation while others are offering a more comical view of the ad.

“There’s a certain logic to making edgy ads networks will refuse to carry, especially if you’re trying to wake up a sleepy brand. You get publicity from being banned. That presumably drives viewers to your website to see what they have to be protected against.” |

“I have always liked John, and his troubles in private life are just that to me....private. Grip it and rip it? I am a follower of this doctrine. CBS has shown far more graphically explicit material than this before.” |

“My own opinion: the last thing we need is to encourage more drunken yahoos to take up golf. But by far the thing about the video that is most disturbing? Having to listen to John Daly sing.” |

“We’re not naive to the dangers of consuming too much alcohol — or fatty meats — but this seems like more of an attempt to preserve golf’s ‘pristine’ image on the network that airs the Masters than anything else.” |

“Apparently this ad was not approved by the fine folks at CBS. John Daly appearing to promote over imbibing was the central problem they had. My question is, how is this ad all that different from one of their reality shows?” |

“I applaud your decision to not air this commercial, CBS, but not because I’m opposed to the implied beer-drinking that it features. My God, I had to stop the video halfway through because my ears started bleeding. Add ‘singing’ to the list of things that John Daly does not excel at, along with ‘gambling’, ‘marriage’. and ‘not being fat’.” |
