$tock Tracker: Zumiez Zooms To An Early Lead In ’07

THE DAILY’s $tock Tracker follows 50 stocks in areas that include sports activities,
goods and services, publishing, media and entertainment. The following is a list
of the ten best and worst performances among these stocks for Q1 ’07. Three of
the top four performers in Q1 fall into the action sports and ski sector, led
by Zumiez’ 36% rise. Two of last year’s worst performers, Volcom (+16%) and Six
Flags (+15%), have rebounded so far in ’07. Take-Two Interactive (+13%) and Activision
(+10%) broke into the top ten performers, while Midway Games, last year’s worst
$tock Tracker performer, fell another 10% in Q1, THQ Inc. lost 5% and Electronic
Arts remained flat.
GOLF: With The Masters set to tee off on Thursday, Callaway Golf (+10%) snuck into a tie for tenth place among the best Q1 performers. Shaft maker Aldila (+9%) and Nike (+8%), a multi-sector stock, fell just outside the top ten.
BOTTOM PERFORMERS: Daktronics, which blew away its $tock Tracker competition in ’06, gaining 150%, fell 26% in Q1. But the most significant development among the bottom ten so far this year may be that four of last year’s worst performers sunk even further: McClatchy Co. (-27%), Magna Entertainment and Youbet.com (-19% each), and Finish Line (-12%).
