Iger Discusses Advertising Opportunities
On Disney’s Revamped Web Site |
Disney President & CEO Robert Iger, in a presentation at the Bear Stearns Media
Conference in Palm Beach, Florida, yesterday, said that Internet downloads “do
not cannibalize other distribution formats, and the newly designed Disney.com
is an enormous opportunity for advertisers,” according to Szalai & Bond of the
HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Iger indicated that in the month since its relaunch, Disney.com
“has been streaming about 100 million videos per week, and Disney intends to better
monetize all that action via online ads.” Iger: “The advertising industry is behind
where it should be.” He indicated that Disney “intends on educating [advertisers]
as to the opportunities that its new-media initiatives hold.” Also speaking at
the conference, CBS Corp. President & CEO Les Moonves “argued that new-media firms
don’t fully respect the importance of content yet” (
HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 3/6).
Moonves also “reiterated his desire to receive cash compensation for retransmission
consent” for the company’s TV stations. Moonves “again used an ESPN analogy,”
saying that if Comcast pays $3.25 per subscriber, per month for ESPN, $0.50 of
that payment is for ABC. Moonves: “Who cares what they call it? It’s all going
into the same pot” (
