Scratch Lottery
Ticket To Debut March 28

The MLB Cardinals and Royals will each be featured on new $5 scratch tickets from
the Missouri Lottery, according to Rick Alm of the K.C. STAR. The tickets, debuting
on March 28, will feature instant cash prizes of up to $100,000, and losers will
be eligible for a “series of second-chance summer drawings for prizes redeemable
during the 2008 season, including season tickets, all-expense-paid road trips
to games in Chicago, tossing the ceremonial first pitch at a home game and hundreds
of Royals and Cardinals team jerseys and other logo merchandise items.” MLB owners
last year “voted unanimously to allow their logos and other baseball icons such
as the All-Star Game’s to be used by state lotteries.” The Massachusetts Lottery
game featuring the Red Sox last year was the “first such deal.” Bev Opie, a VP
with a Scientific Games Corp. subsidiary handling licensing deals between state
lotteries and MLB, said that “more than a dozen other state lotteries will announce
similar games with their ball teams in coming weeks.” Opie said while teams previously
“kind of stood off” from gambling partnerships, “now they realize the kind of
money lotteries raise for good causes.” Missouri Lottery Promotions Manager Jennifer
Kempker said that MLB included “requirements that 10[%] of the prizes represented
merchandise purchased by the lottery to generate sales revenue for the teams and
minimum advertising air-time buys during game broadcasts” (
