AFL VooDoo Set League Record For Season-Ticket Sales

AFL VooDoo Owner & Exec VP Rita Benson LeBlanc said that the team, which is returning this season after suspending operations for a year due to Hurricane Katrina, has sold more season tickets “than any other team in the 21-year history of the league,” according to Jim Derry of the New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE. Benson LeBlanc said the current number is “over 12,000.” Derry writes the team expects to reach about 14,000 by the March 9 home opener, for which it “is leaving available 2,000 single-game tickets.” The team sold “slightly more than 5,000” season tickets in its inaugural year of ’04, followed by 6,000 in ’05 (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 2/27).

SAINTS: San Antonio-based NuStar Energy Chair Bill Greehey said that if city leaders “move quickly enough,” San Antonio still “has a good shot at convincing the Saints to make the move” to the city. Greehey: “If the city and county can get together and aggressively go after this, then there is a great opportunity. All the stars are in place.” Former Vikings Owner Red McCombs, a San Antonio resident, said that he is “not certain that the Saints are currently ‘in play,’ but he does say there is enough reason for local leaders to keep their eye on the ball.” McCombs: “New Orleans still has some serious, serious issues that are life and death in a lot of ways” (Scott Bailey, SAN ANTONIO BUSINESS JOURNAL, 2/23 issue).
