Message In A Ballpark: Police Add Citizens Bank Park To Tour

By Don Muret, Staff Writer, SportsBusiness Journal

Police To Play Concert At
Citizens Bank Park In July
The Police have booked a July 19 performance at Citizens Bank Park, the fourth MLB ballpark scheduled for the group’s first tour in 23 years. Global Spectrum, the third-party facility manager that helps the Phillies operate the ballpark, negotiated the deal, but company officials declined to disclose contract terms. Phillies Dir of Ballpark Enterprises Joe Giles previously acknowledged that the team gets a share of concert-related revenue, income they do not have to share with other clubs under MLB rules. Jimmy Buffett’s two shows at Citizens Bank Park in ’05 grossed $6.8M in ticket sales, and last year, one Bon Jovi concert grossed $2.7M at the ballpark, according to Billboard magazine. Ballpark seating capacity for concerts is about 45,000, and The Police could surpass the combined Buffett grosses based on the $50, $90 and $225 ticket prices. Buffett tickets were $126 and $46. The Police have already sold out two shows at Fenway Park and single dates at Dodger Stadium and McAfee Coliseum, and Live Nation is expected to announce Wrigley Field shows for Labor Day weekend, according to published reports.
