Newsmakers: Shell Makes Splash With Harvick’s Wins

THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of some people and entities in sports business. Here are this week’s newsmakers.

WIN: SHELL — We’re not saying what they did was right or within the guidelines, but KEVIN HARVICK’s dual wins at Daytona lead to major exposure for the company whose logo adorns his car and fire suit. Yes, it’s caught the eye of the NASCAR police and raised the ire of NASCAR’s official fuel supplier, Sunoco, but mission accomplished for a company that wanted to use motorsports to increase its exposure.

LOSE: WOOL FABRIC — It may seem like a stretch, but the decision by MLB and New Era to unveil new baseball caps made of a polyester material instead of wool earns praise in our minds and is a certain setback for the old-fashioned fabric. New Era VP/Global Marketing JOHN DEWAAL said it best when he declared, “Wool isn’t a performance fabric.” We concur. But sheep would probably consider this a win.

DRAW: OLDER RETIRED PLAYERS — The NBA’s pre-’65ers land an increase in pension payouts, but the announcement comes just days after former NFLers — who are also seeking a better pension — sue over the allocation of revenues and improper representation of Players Inc. Warranted or not, the suit continues to paint the older gridiron stars in a sympathetic light.
