NFL Holds Meeting On Player Safety, Conduct

Lewis Participates In Meeting On
NFL Player Safety And Conduct

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, NFLPA Exec Dir Gene Upshaw, Steelers Chair Dan Rooney, Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis and “about a dozen NFL players” participated in a two-hour meeting on Thursday in which they “discussed several topics, including player safety and player conduct,” according to Bill Williamson of the DENVER POST. Bowlen said that the meeting was not about late Broncos CB Darrent Williams’ shooting death but “did say it might have ‘prompted’ it.” Williamson notes Lewis, whose team has had nine players arrested in the past year, was the only head coach there. Goodell said that the players at the meeting were “selected by Upshaw and NFLPA president Troy Vincent,” and that there will be “more meetings as the league and players look for ways to educate players on all aspects of off-field life.” Goodell: “We’re always interested in understanding what players say about what they’re facing, the issues, and what we can be doing. We think we have great programs for our players, but we’re constantly re-evaluating that” (DENVER POST, 2/23).
