Signing Bonus Expenditures For MLB Draft Picks

The Cubs awarded $9.3M in signing bonuses to their draft picks in ’06, despite not having a third- or fourth-round pick. The Cubs’ figure was close to $3M more than any other club, due to the team-record $7.25M signing bonus given to fifth-round pick Jeff Samardzija. Andrew Miller, who was picked sixth overall by the Tigers, received the biggest signing bonus of any first-round pick. The following presents MLB team-by-team signing bonus expenditures from recent years, as well as signing bonus figures for first-round picks from the ’06 draft (Baseball America Prospect Handbook).
