NORTH OF THE BORDER: HELENA GUERGIS was named Secretary of State for Sport by Canadian Prime Minister STEPHEN HARPER. Guergis replaces PETER VAN LOAN, who had held the position since November. Guergis “may not be long for the position either (as) a national election could be called in 2007 should Harper’s government lose a confidence vote, perhaps resulting in a totally new government.” DAVID EMERSON will remain the minister for the 2010 Games and Int’l Trade (AROUND THE RINGS, 1/5 issue).
