Tuna Helper? Giants Turn Down Offer From Parcells To Be GM

Parcells Reportedly Turned Down
In Offer To Become Giants GM
The NFL Giants “have rebuffed an overture from Cowboys coach Bill Parcells” about returning to the team as GM, according to an NFL exec cited by Garafolo & Needell of the Newark STAR-LEDGER. Sources said that Parcells “had informed the Giants through an intermediary that he would be interested in returning to the organization to replace the retiring Ernie Accorsi.” Garafolo & Needell report the news comes after Patriots VP/Player Personnel Scott Pioli said he was staying with the club “for personal reasons.” The Giants had “planned to interview Pioli and were granted permission” by the Patriots. CBS analyst and former Texans GM Charley Casserly was interviewed by the Giants, but he is “considered a long shot” (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 1/9).

ALL IN THE FAMILY: SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL’s Daniel Kaplan reports the NFL is looking at the Bears’ ownership structure “to determine how the club would remain family controlled beyond the life of the team’s longtime matriarch, Virginia McCaskey, while still fulfilling league regulations.” The league requires a “single individual to own at least 20[%] of a club, so if the 11 grandchildren with ownership stakes were to assume voting control, one may need to buy out some of the others to reach the league threshold.” A Bears spokesperson said, “All contingencies have been considered and provided for, and the family will continue to maintain ownership” (SBJ, 1/8 issue).

NO QUICK FIX: SI.com’s Peter King wrote of Redskins Owner Daniel Snyder’s typical spending on free agents, “Maybe you shouldn’t try so hard to win the NFL Offseason Championship, even one like this year’s, when you need all the positive pub you can get with the 10-year leases on club seats and boxes due for renewal at FedEx Field” (SI.com, 1/8).

PLAYER INVOLVEMENT: NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reported the Cardinals “are having actual players doing some of the interview process” in the search for a new head coach. DT Darnell Dockett, SS Adrian Wilson, WR Anquan Boldin and QB Kurt Warner “have conducted some of the interviews with the candidates” (NFL Network, 1/8).
