  • MLS Real Salt Lake Intends To Hand Over Financials To County

    Real Salt Lake To Make
    Financial Information Public
MLS Real Salt Lake (RSL) spokesperson Eric Gelfand “released a statement vowing to ‘release our financial information to [Salt Lake County’s] Debt Review Committee and ... to anyone without a confidentiality clause,’” according to Derek Jensen of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. A report on Friday “revealed RSL had sought a confidentiality agreement, preventing the county –- and taxpayers –- from scrutinizing” the team’s books “even while it seeks $55[M] in public funds to help build” a new stadium. County officials “intend to make most of the numbers available to soccer fans and foes alike.” Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon: “I’m sure the public would like at least the basics to see whether the project makes sense or not.” RSL CEO Dean Howes indicated that the team “always intended to release its business plan.” He said that the delay “came from fear that ‘competitors’ would see RSL’s finances.” Howes: “It’s never been about trying to keep these from the county” (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 12/2). A SALT LAKE TRIBUNE editorial stated Howes’ explanation has “always been bunk. RSL may be in competition with other MLS teams on the pitch, but they are partners in the boardroom, and keeping financial secrets from them isn’t justified” (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 12/2).
