Woods Launches Golf Course Design Firm

Tiger Woods announced the creation of Tiger Woods Design (TWD), a golf course design company that will work on projects globally. Woods will Chair the firm, which will have a strategy appealing to all golf skill levels. The firm will seek opportunities for course development, while also focusing on natural preservation (TWD). In Orlando, Steve Elling writes while Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio and Greg Norman “typically draw between [$1.5-2.5M] for their basic design work, Woods is thought to be asking upward of 10 times that figure.” Former American Society of Golf Course Architects President Tom Marzolf said, “He might be worth it in terms of the revenue he could generate for the right project.” Elling notes TWD will have “no ties to the design firm run by” Woods’ agency, IMG (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 11/7). In N.Y., Paul Tharp writes Woods is “expected to follow in the footsteps of golf’s best-known course builders — Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer — and tackle projects in China for his first three or four layouts.” Michael Gleason, a golf course architect and consultant, said, “That’s where the demand is. It’s booming. His name is going to draw a lot of investors — and he can name his own price” (N.Y. POST, 11/7).
