Charity Stripe: Chargers Looking For New Charitable Partner

The Chargers “will no longer send food donated by fans to the troubled” San Diego Food Bank, which saw eight of its nine directors resign in protest this week. Chargers Dir of PR Bill Johnston: “When we do our major food drive, which is on Nov. 5, we want to make sure that we have a partner that is there to work with us. We couldn’t get that commitment from the food bank, that they would be in business after Nov. 1, so we’re looking for another partner to work with” (Jeff McDonald, SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/12).

IN MEMORY: The Enshriners civic organization yesterday gave $50,000 toward the Buck O’Neil Education & Research Center and “challenged other groups to do the same.” The money will go to the “Thanks a Million, Buck” campaign, which the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum “hopes will grow to $1[M] by Nov. 11.” The gift brings the total to “at least $160,000, although donations since O’Neil’s death Friday had not been tallied.” The Museum’s ultimate goal is to raise $15M “to convert the old Paseo YMCA into an education center” (K.C. STAR, 10/12)....The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) will debut the Maggie Dixon Rookie Coach of the Year Award this season, named after the late Army coach who died in April at the age of 28. The award will be presented during the WBCA convention at the Women’s Final Four (USA TODAY, 10/12)
