MAKING AN IMPACT: The NFL Impact Program, a summer day camp that began this year at the Univ. of Southern California “to exercise muscle and minds,” drew about 90 boys from the L.A. area who “spent a little more than three weeks in July at the free camp.” The program “targeted boys entering the seventh and eighth grades.” Former NFLer Riki Ellison, who “came up with the idea,” hopes to introduce it in other cities. USC football coach Pete Carroll helped design the camp’s on-field component (L.A. TIMES, 8/8).
CANCER RESEARCH: U.S. swimmer Brendan Hansen, who holds the world record in the 100-meter breaststroke, and the Chicago-based Leukemia Research Foundation (LRF) are developing a series of events and programs to help fund research to find the causes and cures for leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers. A series of swim clinics are under development for various U.S. cities; additional fund raising programs may include sales of a signature line of Hansen merchandise (LRF).
DONATION LINE: The Joan and Preston Robert Tisch family is making a “substantial contribution” over the next ten years to the National Football Foundation & College HOF’s (NFF) Play It Smart program in memory of late NFL Giants co-Owner Robert Tisch, who passed away last November (NFF)....The ECHL and its 25 teams raised over $2.3M for charity relief funds during the ’05-06 season (ECHL).
