GOAL SETTING: ESPNSOCCERNET.com’s Ives Galarcep wrote the MLS All-Stars’ 1-0 win over Premier League club Chelsea on Saturday “was nowhere near as meaningful as the match’s broadcast and several articles written in the aftermath would suggest. ... When will the league, its players and its fans stop trying so desperately to gain approval from the segment of the soccer-loving population in this country that just doesn’t care much for MLS?” (ESPNSOCCERNET.com, 8/7). ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser: “This is what MLS is happy with? That they beat some team in an exhibition game that nobody cared about?” (“PTI,” ESPN, 8/7).
REVENUE SERVICE: WTA Acura Classic co-Owner Raquel Giscafre “pronounced the tournament a financial success despite the 11th-hour withdrawals” of Serena and Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport. Giscafre: “The ticket sales went very well, and we had great supporting sponsors. But it would have been great if all the players had come, as promised” (Jerry Magee, SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/7).
