Pastrana Becomes Second Athlete To
Win Three Events At One X Games
TRICKS ARE FOR KIDS: In L.A., Peter Yoon writes Travis Pastrana’s “double back flip on a motorcycle will be the defining moment of X Games 12.” These will be “remembered as Pastrana’s games,” as he won three Gold Medals in rally car, Moto X best trick and Moto X freestyle joining Dave Mirra as the “only athletes in the history of the games to win three events in one year.” Pastrana’s double back flip was “one of several never-before-landed tricks” this year, and X Games 12 will “surely go down as a turning point in the history of action sports.” While motocross “may have to wait for its next groundbreaking stunt, skateboarding and BMX could see rapid progression because of the advent of the big-air ramp,” which costs up to $500,000 to build. X Games GM Chris Stiepock: “We’ve only seen the beginning of what can be done on that ramp” (L.A. TIMES, 8/7). Also in L.A., Dan Arritt writes, “Impressive showings last season convinced Subaru of America to sign Pastrana to a multiyear deal.” Subaru also signed DC Shoes Founder and ’05 Rally America rookie of the year Ken Block, and Pastrana said that Block’s “ties to the X Games -– his company’s brand is a favorite among the athletes and their followers –- deserves just as much credit for helping rally car racing reach the national stage” and become an X Games event (L.A. TIMES, 8/5).
