Ducks Moving Radio Broadcasts To Arte Moreno’s KMXE-AM

Ducks Switching Radio
Broadcasts To KMXE

The Ducks have reached a deal with L.A.’s KMXE-AM to broadcast all of the team’s pre-, regular- and postseason games during the ’06-07 season, marking the first time in club history that every game, including exhibition games, will be aired live. The station, which is owned by Angels Owner Arte Moreno, will also air pre- and postgame shows, as well as other hockey-related programming. The station’s 50,000-watt signal is the fourth-largest in California and the 14th largest in the country (Ducks). In California, Michael Lev reports the deal is for three years. KMXE, which also carries Spanish-language Angels broadcasts, is “in the process of changing formats and adding more English-language programming.” The station is also changing its call letters to KLAA. The Ducks had been on San Diego-based XPRS-AM for the past three years, but Padres games “often pre-empted the Ducks, forcing them to farm out their games” (O.C. REGISTER, 8/4). The Angels have one year remaining on their deal with KSPN-AM, and Angels VP/Communications Tim Mead said that the Ducks deal “does not necessarily mean the Angels will opt out” of their deal to move to KMXE next season. Mead: “Our intention is to honor our contract. ... [But] we’ll continue to explore the best possible options for this organization” (L.A. TIMES, 8/4).
