Newsmakers: All-Star Game Just Part Of MLB’s Big Week

THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of some people and entities in sports business. Here are this week’s newsmakers:

WIN: MLB –- Secures new TV deals with Fox and Turner that combined should surpass the $2.5B value of Fox’ current deal; achieves largest year-to-year increase in All-Star Game ratings since early ‘80s; BUD SELIG touts $5.2B in revenues and 40 million-plus in attendance. Even with the constant talk of steroids, the vital signs of this property all point in the right direction.

LOSE: BILL GILES –- Phillies Chair comes off as remarkably insensitive in mischaracterizing an eyewitness’ account of the BRETT MYERS’ domestic assault incident. Giles states “what really happened was a lot less than what the public thinks happened,” but team President DAVE MONTGOMERY is forced to clarify the next day: “I think Bill clearly misunderstood me.” After the team was blasted for mishandling the incident from the beginning, Giles only makes the situation worse this week.

DRAW: COMCAST –- FCC approves $17.6B acquisition of Adelphia but imposes serious measures on the distribution of sports content. RSNs now have the right to force arbitration to get carriage on Comcast systems, and Comcast can no longer keep its own RSNs off its competitors’ systems. One analyst says, “It’s a mixed day for the cable guys. They got it done, but they don’t like the conditions.”
