Stick Check: N.Y. Awarded NLL Franchise For ’07 Season

Galleon Group Founder Gary Rosenbach yesterday was formally awarded N.Y.’s first-ever NLL franchise. The team will begin play in ’07 and play at least four games at Madison Square Garden. The team will conduct a contest on its Web site allowing fans to suggest and vote on the team name. Rosenbach is Principal Owner of the new team and Four Winds Financial Group President Richard Ullmann will serve as President. Others in the ownership include General Atlantic President William Ford, The Blackstone Group Senior Managing Dir Nick Leone and The Blackstone Senior Managing Dir Flip Huffard. The NLL in ’07 will have 13 teams in the U.S. and Canada (NLL). In N.Y., Diane Cardwell notes team officials are in discussions to hold the remaining four home games at Nassau Coliseum. Officials estimated tickets would cost $20-25 and predicted that the owners “would work out a deal to broadcast games locally.” N.Y. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, on what he would name the team: “The Mighty Mikes seems to have a nice ring, don’t you think?” (N.Y. TIMES, 7/12). The team expects average attendance to be 4,000-6,000 for the first year (N.Y. POST, 7/12).
