ON GUARD: In Miami Barry Jackson reported Heat G Dwyane Wade “has been flooded with endorsement offers since the NBA Finals, including several movie scripts.” Wade’s agent, Henry Thomas, said that he and Wade are “‘going to be very careful’ about what they accept.” The movies “likely will be declined” because Wade has committed to play for the U.S. basketball team at the ’08 Olympics (MIAMI HERALD, 7/9).
A-DON’T: In DC, Steve Silver wrote MLS United F Freddy Adu’s “novelty seems to have worn off with marketers,” as he has “disappeared” from Nike, Campbell’s and Sierra Mist ads. Univ. of Oregon Warsaw Sports Marketing Center Managing Dir Paul Swangard said, “Looking back on those who invested the types of dollars they did in him, they wouldn’t consider it a success yet.” MLS Dir of Communications Will Kuhns said that while Adu “has been relegated to a minimal presence in league marketing materials, [he] remains a major part of the league’s marketing strategy.” 16W Marketing Senior Dir for Talent Marketing Bob Philp said that he believes “many companies investing in Adu are not looking for a quick hit, rather they are calculating his star potential to develop in the future.” Silver noted Adu was featured in a Got Milk? ad in last week’s SI (WASHINGTON TIMES, 7/8).
COO COO FOR RED BULL: The BOSTON GLOBE’s Beggy & Shanahan report Red Bull has not yet offered Red Sox CF Coco Crisp an endorsement deal, despite Crisp crediting a game-saving catch last month to the energy drink. Red Bull spokesperson Patrice Radden said, “My inbox was flooded after that. ESPN ran that catch a gazillion times. You can’t buy that kind of advertising.” Radden added, “We do plan to reach out to him.” Beggy & Shanahan note more than 100 athletes endorse Red Bull (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/10).
